Ichneumons

Description:
Adults usually have brown bodies, up to 2 inches in length, marked with black and yellow markings and transparent wings. Females have a very long (up to 3 inches) thread-like ovipositor.

Benefit:
The Ichneumonidae family contains many species considered to be beneficial insects because their larvae develop on the immature stages of butterflies and moths, beetles, flies, and wasps other insect pests, eventually killing them.

Life cycle:
The larva of Megarhyssa macrurus lunator hatch from eggs inserted into the tunnels of the pigeon tremex (a wood wasp). Larvae are grub-like and develop through several instars before pupating inside a cocoon in host insect tunnels. Adults emerge in the spring. . Most species overwinter in a cocoon as a mature larva, although some spend the winter as adult females. There may be 1 to 10 generations produced annually depending on species.
